How to calculate your Life Path Number

The most common method, known as theosophical reduction, consists of adding all the digits in the date of birth and then reducing the total to a single digit—unless it forms a master number.

Example: 03/17/1980

1 + 7 + 0 + 3 + 1 + 9 + 8 + 0 = 29 → 2 + 9 = 11

Here, 11 is a master number, so it is retained. It can also be read as a 2 if it is not considered “activated.”

The steps are therefore simple: write out the full date, add all its digits, and then reduce the total.

If the reduction produces 11 or 22, and sometimes 33, these can be retained as master numbers instead of being reduced further. A Life Path 11 carries the intensified intuition and sensitivity of the 2; a 22 carries the constructive capacity of the 4 on a larger scale. When they are not integrated, they are often experienced through their reduced value, 2 or 4.

Other approaches exist and produce the same result in most cases, but not always—particularly when a master number appears during an intermediate step:

segmented reduction separately reduces the day, month, and year before adding the three results; total reduction adds the complete values of the day, month, and year, then reduces the total.
