The method
Add the day of birth, the month of birth, and the year being examined—the current calendar year, not the year of birth—and then reduce the total.
Example: a person born on March 17, for the year 2026
1 + 7 (day) + 3 (month) + 2 + 0 + 2 + 6 (year) = 21 → 2 + 1 = 3
This person is therefore experiencing a personal year 3, centered on expression, creativity, and social openness.
A point of reference: the personal year and the calendar year
The personal year changes on each birthday, not on January 1. During the months preceding the birthday, the influence of the previous personal year is still present, often accompanied by a gradual transition toward the next one. Some schools nevertheless consider it to begin on January 1; the important point is to adopt one convention and follow it consistently.
The nine-year cycle
The personal year is part of a cycle running from 1 to 9 before beginning again:
1: new beginning, initiative; 2: patience, relationships, adjustment; 3: expression, creativity; 4: work, structure; 5: change, movement; 6: commitment, responsibility; 7: stepping back, introspection; 8: achievement, results; 9: completion, transition.
Some interpretations also retain master years 11—intensity and heightened awareness—and 22—major achievement—as amplified variations of 2 and 4.
Refining the interpretation with the month and day
The personal year establishes the overall tone. It can then be refined through the personal month—personal year plus the number of the month, reduced—and the personal day, allowing for an increasingly detailed interpretation of time.
In summary
The Personal Year is calculated by adding your birth day and birth month to the current year, then reducing the total. It indicates the dominant dynamic of a given year within a nine-year cycle, and can be refined by combining it with the Personal Month and Personal Day.
