The principle of reduction

Reducing a number means adding its digits until a simple result is obtained:

28 → 2 + 8 = 10 → 1 + 0 = 1 42 → 4 + 2 = 6 137 → 1 + 3 + 7 = 11 → 11 (master number, see below)

This widely used method is called theosophical reduction: all the digits are added without distinction, and the total is then reduced. It has the advantage of being simple and naturally preserving master numbers.

Why reduce a number?

A multidigit number contains several levels of information. Reduction identifies its dominant energy: the full number reveals a structure, while the reduced number indicates its primary tendency. Both can be useful—the total before reduction is known as a compound number and carries additional nuances—but the final digit remains the basis of interpretation.

The special case of master numbers

Some numbers are not systematically reduced: 11, 22, and sometimes 33. These are master numbers, considered amplified and more demanding vibrations.

29 → 2 + 9 = 11: the 11 can be retained or read as a 2, depending on whether it is considered “activated.” 22 can be retained as is, or read as a 4 under tension if it has not been integrated.

In practice, 11 and 22 are always taken into account, while the treatment of 33 depends on the school. Higher values such as 44 and 55 are rarely retained except as compound numbers.

Full reduction or dual interpretation

Two approaches coexist:

Full reduction: the number is always reduced to a single digit. Example: 38 → 3 + 8 = 11 → 1 + 1 = 2. Dual interpretation: both the intermediate number and the reduced digit are retained. Example: 38 → 11 / 2, allowing for a more nuanced interpretation, as the energy of 11 colors the underlying 2.

Reducing a date: several methods

There are also several ways to reduce dates—theosophical, total, segmented, and others. They produce the same result in most cases, but may differ when a master number appears during an intermediate step. Common mistakes

Three mistakes occur frequently: reducing too early without examining the total, thereby missing a master number or significant compound number; mixing several methods within the same calculation; and treating master numbers inconsistently. The golden rule is to remain consistent in your method.
